Birth: Feb. 28, 1795 Virginia, USA
Death: Nov. 20, 1851 Scott County, Iowa, USA
John and his wife, Elizabeth (Myers) Thompson (1803-1889) were married 9 Dec 1824 in Jefferson Co., West Virginia. Wife Elizabeth is buried in the Hebron Cemetery, Nicollett Co., Minnesota
Their children included:
Thomas Bennett Thompson (1825-1903)
Julia Ann (Mrs. Johnson) Maw (1827-1892)
Sarah Helen Thompson (1830-1830)
Almira Elizabeth (Mrs. Madison) Pickens (1831-1892)
Mary Ellen (Mrs. James) Hughes (1834-1898)
John Wesley Thompson (1837-1915)
Lydia Malvina (Mrs. Beriah) King (1840-1920)
Sarah Adaline (Mrs. James) Quinn (1843-1922).
John Elton Thompson was one of seven early settlers of Allen's Grove Township who opened farms on the prairie at the edge of the grove. John and his family arrived in Allen's Grove Township in 1838 and are listed on the 1840 census. When the Thompson family came to Iowa, they found a very primitive area; no post office until August 1850, and the first store in 1859, both coming long after John's death. John and his wife, Elizabeth (Myers) Thompson, were blessed with two sons and six daughters, but raised only seven children as one daughter named Sarah Helen passed away while still an infant in 1830.
I found a file in the Davenport Library given to them from the Scott County court house labeled "John E. Thompson" which contained all legally documented information on him after his death, including a promissory note dated April 17, 1847, with his signature. A final report of his estate bears the signature of his son, Thomas B. Thompson, who was administrator of his father's estate; a receipt containing the signature of his wife, Elizabeth; as well as lists of his personal property.
From the Allens Grove Township federal census of 1850, John was a farmer, age 55, born in Virginia, had property worth $300 and lived with his wife, Elizabeth age 45, and children "Bennett" age 25, Mary age 16, John W. age 14, "Melvina" age 10 and Sarah age 7.
John Elton's small rectangular tombstone lies on the extreme south side of the cemetery, about halfway up the hill when you enter from the far south gate and has the inscription "J.E. Thompson, died November 20, 1857, aged 56 years, 8 months, and 20 days". There is no record of his death in the Scott County courthouse.
