Harold Wheatly, son of Judge and Mrs. Foster Wheatly, will arrive tomorrow for reburial at National cemetery. Wheatly was killed April 11, 1944, in a bombing raid over Germany. Wheatly was born in Jefferson City Sept. 10, 1920, and was educated in the public schools and the Junior college. He was among the first to receive flight training under the Civilian Pilot Training program at the old Robertson airport across the river. The lieutenant served in both the naval and army air arms during the war. He first entered the naval air service, but after eight months was discharged because of an ear condition. He later joined the army and was subsequently commissioned a bombardier. He received his training at San Angelo, Tex., and was sent to Europe in May, 1943. At the time of his death the 23-year-old officer was participating in the largest bombing raid in the history of his command. The attack was made by 2,000 planes and was directed at Oschersleben and Bernberg, Germany. He had already received the air medal with three oak leaf clusters for meritorious service when he was killed. Surviving are his fiancee, Miss Doris McCubbin, a teacher at Southwest Baptist college, Bolivar; his parents, Judge and Mrs. Foster Wheatly, one brother, Chief Boatswain R. W. Wheatly of Newport, R.I., and one sister, Miss Jerene Wheatly of the home. Wheatly was the only member of the I.O.O.F. lodge here to lose his life in the war. He was also a member of the Roy Sone post. Veterans of Foreign Wars. The latter organization will perform the military honors at his burial.
