Melbourne General Cemetery is a 110 acre necropolis located 2 km north of the city of Melbourne in the suburb of Carlton. It was established by an act of the New South Wales Parliament in 1850 and the cemetery was opened on the 1st of June 1853. Since its opening, close to a million people have been buried in the cemetery and it is the last resting place for many famous Australians. A number of graves are classified as historically significant by the National Trust. In 1994, Victoria legalised above-ground burials and the first mausoleum in the cemetery was opened in 1998.
There were approximately 25 compartments (Sections) which were over-buried last century. Most of these contained public (Common) burials hence there were very few headstones. Over-burials occurred when clean filling was taken in and put on top of existing gravesites then that land was resold as new graves (usually with room for two or three burials. Photos of any of the original plots is impossible due to newer graves being in that place.
